Leaky Pipe Temporary Fix

Puddles under your sink can gradually create water damage and induce mold growth leading to costly repairs.  Almost every pipe water leak occurs at pipe joints.  If your plumbing is suffering from a joint failure, you may be able to use a joint filler compound (commonly known as pipe dope) which can be bought at nearly any hardware store.  A couple of ideas to remember when using joint compound:

  • Always place the joint compound to the male thread of the pipe (You will only need a liberal amount to the threads).
  • Always avoid placing joint compound inside the pipe (which is why it is should not be applied to the female thread of the pipe.

Tip: You may find that using PTFE tape along with pipe joint compound seals a leak much easier and sturdier than just using pipe joint compound alone.

Joint compound can effectively seal small problems like thread cracks for a limited amount of time.  However, it will not address the cause of the problem.  Typically, plumbing pipes have a long shelf life, so if a leak has occurred, there is probably a looming problem that should be permanently fixed.  After you have set up your temporary fix, give us a call to schedule professional service to your plumbing.
