The 7 Checks That Prevent September Disasters
- Water heater health: note the age, check for any signs of leakage at the base, listen for sediment rumbling when it heats. If your unit is 8+ years old in San Diego’s hard water, plan a replacement before it dies on you mid-September.
- Flush every toilet: any toilet that’s been used lightly during summer (guest bathroom, kids’ bathroom during a long trip) should be flushed and checked for running or weak flush before daily use resumes.
- Test the main shutoff valve: emergency preparedness — when a supply line bursts at 7 AM on a Tuesday, you need to know exactly where the shutoff is and that it actually works.
- Snake the shower drains: summer hair growth + chlorine + sunscreen residue creates aggressive buildup. Pull a hair tool through each shower drain before school starts.
- Clear the garbage disposal: run cold water + ice cubes + a sliced lemon. Removes summer’s worth of buildup.
- Check the washing machine hoses: they’re rated for 5-7 year replacement. If yours are original to a 10+ year old machine, replace them preemptively. A burst washer hose can dump 600 gallons per hour into your laundry room.
- Inspect under every sink: look for any moisture, corrosion, or signs of slow leaks. Summer humidity often surfaces problems that weren’t there in spring.

- Coffee grounds (kitchen sink — should go in trash or compost)
- Cheese stuck on plastic containers (should be wiped off before rinsing)
- Pasta and rice (swells in drains, causes clogs)
- Egg shells (always trash, never disposal)
